ABOUT CAR

The California Association for the Retarded is a nonprofit statewide parent and family organization with 9 local member units.

CAR is a "grass roots" organization that was created to inform and educate the general public, assist advocates for people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, and be accessible as a resource to various government organizations. We are proud to have a majority of parents on our board. Our membership includes advocacy organizations, operators of day programs, and parent groups at state developmental centers located throughout the state. This diversity in our membership strengthens our ability to advocate on a wide range of issues.

CAR advocates for choice, maintenance of a continuum of services, and greater involvement of parents and family members in decisions affecting their sons and daughters with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.
